+ Tim Adrianson, Madison, WI
Tim Adrianson has piano "roots" both in Classical and American Popular piano repertoire. Over the years, he has served as pianist for many community theater productions, and as accompanist for numerous cabarets, opera productions, and recitals. More recently, he has participated in several regional Amateur Piano Competitions, with an emphasis on presenting rarely-heard pieces, predominantly from the Early to Mid 20th century. He competed in the Van Cliburn Amateur Competition in 2007, and was a finalist in the 2003 Boston International Piano Competition.

LaMont Barlow began studying piano at age six; he also plays the bassoon and several other woodwind instruments. As a youth, he won numerous young artist competitions and gave performances across the country. He became the second person ever to win the Interlochen Arts Camp concerto competition on two different instruments in consecutive years (bassoon and piano). During college, he won the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra concerto competition on the saxophone. Dr. Barlow is currently finishing his third year of residency in urology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City where he continues to perform as his schedule permits.

Sibylle Barrasso is an author of mystery novels, a pianist, and business consultant. She started playing the piano at age 9, but quit after a year due to a philosophical difference with her teacher (Schubert vs. Czerny). Much later, she fell head over heels in love with the piano while writing a novel about Rachmaninoff's 3rd piano concerto. A California native, she left L.A. with an MBA from UCLA to live in Europe and Brazil for a number of years, where she worked for IBM, and eventually moved to Boston to consult for Bain and Company and Prime Computers. Sibylle studies with Roberto Poli and is a piano performance student at the Rivers School Conservatory.

Miriam Berro started studying piano at age 6 and gave her first recital at age 10. She continued her studies at the Conservatorio Juan Jose Castro, Argentina with pianist Ines Gomez Carrillo until graduation. Passionate about math and physics, she earned a degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Buenos Aires. She also holds a Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Shebrooke, Canada. Miriam has never given up the piano even though his career has been developed always in the field of engineering. Currently she lives in Montreal and continues her studies at McGill University.

Douglas Calegari is an Information Technology Architect, specializing in enterprise system integration, rules engine and process automation technology. He is currently Director of Architecture and Strategic Development at a US-based financial services company. Doug began learning piano at the age of four and continued his studies with local teachers until the age of 21. He took a break from his studies to focus on his career and family but recently started studying again, playing at local recitals and competing in international amateur competitions in Boston, Vienna and Paris.

Judy Darst has a BMA in Piano Performance from the University of Colorado. She was a teacher and adjudicator member of MTNA and the National Guild of Piano Teachers, and a performing member of Ladies Musical Club in Seattle. Carl DiCasoli is a senior biostatistician at Vertex Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, MA. He earned his masters and PhD degrees in statistics at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Prior to that he attended the New England Conservatory of Music as a piano performance major under the guidance of Russell Sherman and was the winner of the concerto competition at the conservatory in 2001 Recently, Carl was the second prize winner of the 2008 Concours International de Grands Amateurs in Paris, the third prize winner in the 2011 Boston International Piano Competition, and a finalist and honourable mention winner in the 2012 International Chopin Competition for Amateur Pianists in Warsaw, Poland.

Philip Feng, a native of Taiwan, began his piano training at the age of 4, and won his first competition at age 11 in the Taiwan National Piano Competition. He received a bachelors degree in physics at Fu-Jen Catholic University, and masters degrees in piano performance and in computer science at State University of New York at Binghamton. He pursued a doctoral degree in piano performance at Indiana University, Bloomington, and later received a Performer Diploma. He has worked as a software engineer since 2000, and teaches piano as a hobby in his home studio.

Marina Fish was introduced to the Royal Conservatory piano program at age eight, and participated in lessons, exams, and local festivals for several years. After a 15 year hiatus from playing, she returned to the piano as an adult student. She has studied with Dimiter Terziev for the past three years and has participated in Masterclasses with Arne Sahlen, Sergei Saratovsky, and Pavel Egorov. Marina holds a degree in Social Work and is currently employed by the Kamloops Hospice Association as a Grief Counsellor. She belongs to multiple piano recital groups which foster the love of piano performance in a home environment.

Christine Foster is an attorney with her own law practice in Seattle, Washington. Her Juris Doctorate degree is with Honors from Seattle University and her self-employed private practice is devoted to representing people injured and disabled owing to work-related incidents. She began piano lessons at age 7 and won numerous local, state and regional competitions between 1975-1983. After a 27-year estrangement from the piano, Christine resumed lessons with Judy Baker in 2010 and was a gold medal winner in the 2010 Seattle International Piano Competition, with the additional recognitions as both Teacher and Audience favorite. In 2011, she was selected a quarter finalist in the Paris International Piano Competition.

George Foukal studied piano from the ages of 9 to 16. This was followed by an interlude of 40 years of veterinary studies ,practice and family priorities until his semi retirement 5 years ago. After relocating from Vancouver to Vernon, B.C. he resumed lessons at his local music school and formed the North Okanagan Amateur Piano Society . George has studied with Frantisek Stein, Jean Sebastien Savoie and Dimiter Terziev, and recently participated in a master class with concert pianist Sergei Saratovsky. He and his wife, an amateur cellist, regularly host chamber music recitals at their home. George’s other interests include cross-country skiing, sculling, reading and travel with his wife and adult children.

Robert Fraser was born and raised in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and studied music history and theory at Harvard, before graduating from Harvard Law School He made his professional career at Goodwin Procter, Boston, retiring as Chairman and Managing Partner. Robert studied piano with Alexander Borovsky during his college years; and for the last seven years with Roberto Poli. He has previously competed on two occasions in the Boston International Piano Competition, and twice in the Berlin competition.

Rebecca Henson is a retired elementary school teacher living in her hometown of Brownfield, Texas, after teaching 3rd and 4th grades in the public schools for 22 years. During retirement she is spending more time with her wonderful children and beloved grandchildren, playing the piano, and reading all those books for which she never had time. The first year of her retirement she competed in the 2007 Cliburn Competition for Outstanding Amateurs. Rebecca previously studied with Jerry Gannaway and Louis Catuogno, and currently takes lessons with Eddie Sharp.

David Hibbard began piano lessons at age 7. After two semesters as a music major at the University of Illinois he took a "summer job" on the railroad and stayed there for over 41 years, the latter half of which were in management. In 1999, some thirty-four years after his most recent formal musical study, David entered the first International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs in Fort Worth, organized by the Van Cliburn Foundation under Richard Rodzinski, and advanced to the Semifinal Round. Since then he has participated in several other amateur competitions, including New York, where in 2003 he was awarded the Gold Medal and Press Jury award.

Adrienne Johnson is a music teacher, playwright and proud mother of four boys. She is a graduate of The Juilliard School where she was a student of Adele Marcus, and now works as a playwright and theatre director. Adrienne presents two plays a year in the Northeast Minneapolis Community, and has been awarded national grants. She has participated in the amateur competitions in Boston and in Washington DC., and recently won a grant that will take her to New York City to participate in the International Keyboard Festival this July. Adrienne most recently appeared as soloist with the Minneapolis Civic Orchestra in May.

Chris Kokkinos was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, and began taking piano lessons at the Academy of Music and Ballet at the age of ten. In 1979 he earned piano certificates from the Orpheon Conservatory (Athens, Greece) and The Royal Schools of Music (London, England) both with distinction. Chris studied Electrical Engineering and Music at Cornell University from where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree (EE) and a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Music) in 1984 and a Master of Engineering Degree (EE) in 1985. Chris lives in Acton, MA with his wife and three sons. He is employed by PTC in Needham, MA, where he is a Vice President in Software Research and Development.

Yasuo Kurimoto is currently both a clinical professor at Kyoto University, and director of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Institute of Biomedical Research and Innovation Hospital. After receiving his PhD from Kyoto University, he was a lecturer and associate professor at Shinshu University and a research fellow at Harvard Medical School. Yasuo was first price winner in both 2009 and 2011 competitions sponsored by Piano Teachers National Association of Japan, and competed in the first Boston International Piano Competition in 2001. He has studied with Keiji Serizawa, Ernst F. Seiler, and Kuri Kojima.

Cathryn Lai works in new product development as Director of Product Management at WMS Gaming. She was named by Casino Enterprise Magazine as an award recipient of the 2012 Great Women of Gaming - Rising Star. She has an MBA in Strategic Management from DePaul University and a MM in Piano Performance from University of Houston, where she studied with renowned pianist Abbey Simon. Cathryn completed her undergraduate studies at Oberlin Conservatory receiving a double degree in Audio Technology and Piano Performance. At Oberlin, she won the Conservatory Concerto Competition and performed the Barber Piano Concerto with the Oberlin Conservatory Orchestra. She has won prizes in several competitions, and has performed as a soloist with the South Carolina Philharmonic Symphony, Charlotte Repertory Orchestra, Woodlands Symphony (TX), and the Oberlin Conservatory Orchestra. Cathryn lives in Chicago with her husband and two year old daughter.

David Leehey is President of the Symphony of Oak Park & River Forest and MacDowell Artists Association and is a founding board member of Pianoforte Foundation in Chicago. He performed the Brahms D minor Concerto in October 2001 and Beethoven Choral Fantasy in April 2011 with the Oak Park Symphony and serves as its orchestral pianist and rehearsal accompanist. He was a semifinalist in the 2001 and 2003 Boston competition and the 2009 and 2011 WIPAC competition. He served as chair of the competition committee for the first Chicago Amateur Piano Competition held in June 2010. When not engaged in musical pursuits, David makes a living as a physician at Loyola University Medical Center and Hines VA Hospital. He and his wife Roslyn live in Oak Park and have three children, Rebecca, Edward, and Anna.

Andy Liao has been playing piano since he was seven. He has previously studied with Howard Aibel, Daniel Shapiro, Sergey Schepkin, and Uriel Tsachor. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.M. in piano performance and B.S. in Actuarial Science. After college, he moved to Boston for work, but continued to play piano extensively. He has taken various classes and chamber music coachings at the Longy School of Music to further his musical education. Additionally, he studies privately with Randall Hodgkinson in Boston.

Manuel Llorens was born in Caracas, Venezuela and immigrated to the US in 1989. He was first exposed to music at age 5, then saw the movie “A Song to Remember” about the life of Chopin and fell in love with his music and the artist, but had to wait until age 16 to start taking lessons. He studied at Simon Bolivar Conservatory, which today is the conservatory for El Sistema in Venezuela. While there he often worked as accompanist and pianist both for the orchestra and other musicians during rehearsals, exams and recitals. Currently Manuel works as a director of sales technology for a software company in Cleveland, Ohio.

Sharon Madison is a native of Chicago, Illinois. Her first piano teacher was her father, Dr. Earl W. Madison, a musician and educator in the Chicago Public Schools. As a youth she attended the Cosmopolitan School of Music and American Conservatory of Music, going on to earn a bachelors degree in music from Hampton University and a masters degree in Educational Psychology from Wayne State University. Sharon also attended DePaul University, where she earned her Teacher Certification in Early Childhood Development. She taught music for many years in the Chicago Public Schools in grades K through 12 before retiring. He has competed in the Chicago Amateur competition in 2012, and three times in the Grands Amateurs Piano Paris. His other activities include theater, swimming and jogging. Neil McKelvie was born in England in 1930. After obtaining an MA from Cambridge University and a PhD from Columbia University in Organic Chemistry, he had two years in the chemical industry and a post-doctoral year at Yale. He then became a Chemistry Professor at the City College of New York and the CUNY Graduate School for 45 years, until retiring six years ago. He has no academic musical education, but his piano teachers have included Manuell Frankell in London until 1954; and (nearly 50 years later) Seymour Bernstein in NY, and lately Mara Waldman. He has played in amateur competitions since 2005 in Boston, Chicago, Berlin and Washington DC, winning a total of six special prizes for e.g. Best Performance of Romantic Music or Best Program.

Anne Miller spent her childhood in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she began taking piano lessons at age 5. She graduated from Harvard with a B.A. in music. Anne attended medical school instead of pursuing a career in music, and is an anesthesiologist and pain management specialist. While in college and in the early years of med school at University of Virginia, she performed in both solo and chamber music/voice recitals. Anne then took a very long break from piano to raise children and practice medicine, returning to music about five years ago. She studies piano with Ya-Fei Chuang.

Kathleen learned piano as a child, sang in choirs and played violin in her school orchestra. After a lengthy gap in her musical education to pursue university degrees in Chemical Physics and in Law, have two children and build her law practice, she resumed serious piano study in 1998. Kathleen earned her diploma in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music in 2005. Toni Rosenberg began piano lessons at age eleven, playing on a Steinway that she also sat beneath in retreat and contemplation, often with her cocker spaniel Tigger. She discontinued lessons at the end of her freshman year at Harvard, where she majored in English literature, and resumed playing intermittently about two decades later. She works as an editor and proofreader, and added a pet-sitting service five years ago. Her daughter is entering her junior year in college. In 2009 Toni joined the Boston Piano Amateurs Association. She studies with Roberto Poli, who has inspired her to seek the focus she lacked in her earlier piano experience.

Esfir Ross was born and grew up in Moldova. She began playing piano at age six, and graduated from Kishinev Conservatory with an MA degree in piano performance. In 1977 she emigrated to Israel, then to Greece and finally to the US in 1980. She studied at the local college and works as a Registered Dental Assistant. In the US she studied with Karl U. Schnabel. She has performed as a soloist and accompanist in the Bay Area, Ohio and Israel. In 2007 she was a semifinalist in Fort Worth and Washington DC, and a finalist in the Colorado Springs Amateur Competition. She received diplomas for most creative programming, and interpretation of Baroque and Romantic music.

Michael Slavin begin playing the piano at age 5 and by the age of 9 attended the Julliard School of Music preperatory division for the next 10 years. His undergraduate years were spent at Cooper Union in New York City where he studied physics. He then attended medical school, and was a full time practicing ophthalmologist in Long Island for 25 years. Michael's retirement from ophthalmology practice several years ago afforded him the time to again study music and practice the piano seriously. He was awarded first prize in the Chicago International Piano Concerto Competition in May 2012 and was a finalist in the international solo piano competition in Chicago and Washington, DC.

In 1992, Jeremy left commercial music to begin graduate study in psychology. Wei Ling Wang began studying piano at a young age and competed in several local, state and regional competitions through high school years. She is also interested in math and science and pursued a degree in computer science. Wei Ling works for a telecommunication company on delivering high speed voice and data services through a complex computer network. In addition to playing the piano, Wei Ling enjoys opera music and travel, and is an active supporter of several music schools and non-profit music organizations. She has won awards at amateur competitions in Seattle, Houston and at PianoTexas.

Eberhard Zagrosek was born in 1942 into a family of musicians. He grew up in Munich and Regensburg in Bavaria in Germany. His musical education started with piano in the age of six and was very intense during the time until the age of 18 years. After that he studied physics at Munich Technical University. For 28 years he worked for Siemens, the German electronics giant, in charge of different management positions in development, sales and general management in Germany and Japan. Since his retirement he again started playing piano, and competed in many amateur competitions. In 2006 he founded the International Piano Amateur Competition Berlin, taking place in the Berlin Philharmonic.
