Our Jury
Jonathan Bass appears frequently throughout the United States as soloist and chamber musician. He has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall, and the North Carolina Symphony at the Appalachian Summer Music Festival. He has been featured on many radio programs throughout the country, including NPR’s "Performance Today". His solo and chamber music recordings have received high acclaim from Gramophone Magazine. A Steinway Artist, Bass gave his New York debut at Weill Recital Hall as the First Prize winner in the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition (1993). He performs frequently at Symphony Hall and Jordan Hall in Boston, and at Tanglewood. Internationally, he has performed in China, Israel, Japan, Poland, Spain, and Russia.
Among the awards he has received are the First Prize in the American Pianists Association Beethoven Fellowship Competition (1989), First Prize in the American National Chopin Competition (1984), First Prize in the National Arts Club Competition (1983), Second Prize in the Washington International Competition (1993), Second Prize in the Young Keyboard Artists Competition (1983), and the Bronze Medal and Mozart Prize at the Robert Casadesus International Piano Competition (1987).
A graduate of the Juilliard School, Mr. Bass holds a Doctor of Music degree from the Indiana University School of Music. He is Professor of Piano at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where he has been on the faculty since 1993 and Chair of the Piano Department from 2008 to 2015. He was also Chair of the Piano Department at Boston University from 2006 to 2008. In addition, has been on the piano faculty of the Preparatory School of New England Conservatory since 1994, and he also serves on the faculty of the Walnut Hill School. His students have won many competition prizes, and he has given numerous master classes throughout the country.
Wayman Chin has performed widely throughout the United States, Asia and the United Kingdom. In the United States, his concerts include performances at Princeton University, the Curtis Institute of Music, Jordan Hall in Boston, and the Honolulu Academy of Arts and the Old First Concert Series in San Francisco. In the Far East, Mr. Chin has appeared at Tsuen Wan Town Hall in Hong Kong, and in the Philippines, on the Sala Foundation concert series, and at the residence of the US Ambassador in Manila.
Wayman Chin’s playing has been described as, “transcendental, long lines spun like glorious gold thread,” “ferociously concentrated, intense, focused, and musically astute” (Boston Herald), “vividly characterized and atmospheric,” (Stamford Mercury, U.K.) and “sheer magic…every note is colored.” (the Freeman, Philippines).
Wayman Chin earned a Bachelor of Music degree with honors from the University of Hartford’s Hartt School and a Master of Music degree from Yale University. He has served on the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and on the Music Program Faculty of the Winter Cycle at the Banff Centre. Mr. Chin's recent activities include a recitals at Dickinson College and on the Rhode Island Chamber Music Concerts, along with master classes in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, and at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Mr. Chin is currently the Dean of the Conservatory at the Longy School of Music of Bard College.
Gila Goldstein serves as the Chair of the Piano Dept. at Boston University School of Music as well as the Director of the Young Artists Piano Program at Boston University Tanglewood Institute. She has given master classes and adjudicated piano competitions throughout the USA, in China, Korea, the Philippines and Israel.
Ms. Goldstein has performed as a solo artist and a collaborative pianist in Canada, China, Europe, Isreal, Korea, Mexico, the Philippines, and throughout the United States. She has performed with the Berliner Symphoniker, Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon LeZion, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquesta Da Camera in Mexico City as well as played solo recitals in Merkin Hall in New York City, Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano, Beijing Concert Hall, Seoul National University, the South Bank Center in London, Konzerthaus in Berlin, Musée de Louvre in Paris, Thayer Hall in Los Angeles, Old First Church in San Francisco, the Gardner Museum and Tsai Performing Center in Boston, Dame Myra Hess concert series in Chicago and the Tel-Aviv Museum, among others.
A champion of the music of Israel's leading composer Paul Ben-Haim, Ms. Goldstein has recorded two volumes of his entire piano and chamber works on the Centaur label. Among the rave reviews the recordings have received worldwide, the American Record Guide wrote: ”Goldstein is a charismatic performer who plays with great flair, delicate nuances, fluid tempi and brilliance”.
Ms. Goldstein obtained her music degrees in piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music where she studied with Prof. Nina Svetlanova and the Tel-Aviv University's School of Music, where her teacher was Prof. Victor Derevianko. www.gilagoldstein.com
Michael Lewin, Chair, the distinguished American pianist, has concertized in over 30 countries. His career was launched with top prizes in the Liszt International Competition, the American Pianists Association Award and the Kapell International Piano Competition. He has appeared as soloist with the Boston Pops, Cairo Symphony, China National RadioOrchestra, State Symphony of Greece, Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the Netherlands Philharmonic, and the Colorado, Guadalajara, Indianapolis, Miami, Nevada, New Orleans, North Carolina, Phoenix, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia Symphonies. Mr. Lewin has performed in Boston's Symphony Hall, New York’s Lincoln Center, Taiwan’s National Concert Hall, Hong Kong’s City Hall Theatre, Holland’s Muziekcentrum, Moscow’s Great Hall, the Athens Megaron, London’s Wigmore Hall, the National Gallery of Art, Spoleto Festival and on PBS Television.
Mr. Lewin's extensive repertoire includes over 40 piano concertos, with particular interest in the music of Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Liszt, American and Latin American composers. He won a Grammy Award in 2014 for his featured performance on the New Age album “Winds of Samsara”, and the Roundglass Music Award in 2018 for his Debussy recordings. His acclaimed compact discs appear on Naxos, Centaur and Sono Luminus, and include the complete piano music of Charles T. Griffes, Scarlatti Keyboard Sonatas, “Michael Lewin plays Liszt”, “Russian Piano Recital”, "Bamboula!", piano music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk, the Bolcom Violin Sonatas with Irina Muresanu, “Piano Phantoms” and “If I Were a Bird.” He most recently released two Debussy discs "Beau Soir" and “Starry Night”, including both books of Préludes, Estampes and other works.
A Steinway Artist, Mr. Lewin is a native New Yorker and studied at the Julliard School. One of America’s most sought-after teachers, he is Piano Professor at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, directs the Boston Conservatory Piano Masters Series and has mentored many prize-winning pianists.

Eri Nakamura has performed widely throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, and her native Japan. Noted for her sensitive and thoughtful playing, she is equally at home as a soloist and as a collaborator with singers and instrumentalists alike.
Ms. Nakamura was born in Hiroshima and began piano studies at the age of four. She has performed with the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, CO, and has appeared as a soloist at Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra. She has appeared in recitals at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Ozawa Hall, Muhlenberg College Piano Recital Series, the Chamber Music Society at Yale, Zephyr International Chamber Music Festival (Italy), Banff Centre, Aspen Music Festival and Norfolk Chamber Music Festival.
In 2016 Ms. Nakamura was named the Leonard Bernstein Piano Fellow at Tanglewood Music Center. She was Collaborative Piano Fellow at Bard Conservatory of Music working before joining the Neave Trio. In 2017 the Trio joined the faculty at the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, MA as an Ensemble-in-Residence. She studied with Sergei Babayan at the Cleveland Institute of Music, earned an Artist Diploma and a Master’s Degree from Yale School of Music, a Bachelor’s degree from San Francisco Conservatory of Music Ms. Nakamura is also a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy.
